Prostate-specific antigen, or PSA TOTAL, is a protein produced by normal, as well as malignant, cells of the prostate gland. The PSA test measures the level of PSA in the blood. For this test, a blood sample is is needed for analysis.  and PSA FREE  test measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) not bound to proteins in the blood, helping to distinguish between benign prostate conditions and potential cancer
 
PSA is commonly ordered as a routine test in men over the age of 55, or 40 if they have a relative who has had prostate cancer. It is used to help identify, diagnose, and monitor prostate cancer. This test should also be ordered if the patient is having difficulty urinating or it becomes painful to do so.
